Track 1.

Ghosts Believe In Us

Are ghosts real? Do they exist as supernatural entities? Do they need to be real to haunt us?

We're all haunted by something or someone.

Haunted by past traumas, unlived history, unrealized dreams, weight of expectations.

Haunted by genetics, circumstance or serendipity.

Yes, Ghosts definitely believe in us but whether it's our better ones or our worst is entirely up to us.

I hesitate to expound too much about this track because my ghosts are different than yours. Some of the ghosts that inspired this song have since faded; some will never go away. But I know they believe in us - they affect and impact us everyday.

Ghosts Believe In Us is a track that's been on the shelf a few years. It is a collaborative effort from a band Matt & I were in called Wayfarer Real with our friend, Byron Lynch. The basic skeleton was recorded 2 years ago but over that time, I've been slowly working them up. I asked Matt to re-record some guitar parts in the fall (2020) and I re-recorded the main string parts at the end & created a completely different ending.

When we first wrote it, the song got heavier as it progressed, with Matt & Byron erupting into full metal guitar riffage but MKDVB is a different beast than Wayfarer Real and the energy of that ending didn't feel right. The heavy ending felt a bit "metal", a bit heavy rock & probably needed a real drummer to really pull it off.

Sometimes, all we can do is embrace our ghosts, good or bad. Even if it's messy and chaotic, beauty can emerge head up from the struggle. That's what I believe. That's what the released version ending reflects.

I've also included one of the early Wayfarer live demos and as you'll hear, the song at the end veers into a completely different, WTF direction. I miss Wayfarer a lot and I'll talk about that project more on the next track, Lullaby.
